i have always sung the 335d praises and having been in one and raced against one i know they are phenomenally quick. I would get one but i can't afford so have decided to get an m3. I thought that on a 1/4 mile they were 50 / 50. I was looking on youtube to find a video to send my mate with a 335d that showed the 335d getting beaten as he had thrashed me at santa pod earlier this year when i was in my 330d.

anyway - no such luck. I cant believe it!

Anyone who measures the worth or enjoyment a car with a stopwatch has no idea why cars are fun.

i know what you mean about stock vs stock but basically everyone gets their 335d remapped so thats what you're going to come up against.

its pretty stupid really and still love the m3, the fact its a bit slower on a 1/4 mile doesnt mean much - you'd just expect the m3 to still have the edge.

getting a good launch is as much due to the driver as it is the car. Could be the guy in the M3 either bogged or over revved it.

What's also quite important is, which car still has a working engine and gearbox at the end?

Stock vs stock, the E46 M3 should be around a second quicker than the E92 335d assuming both cars are in good condition.

Obviously people who buy M3's are just posers, impressed by a little badge and some marketing. Real racers, and anyone else in a hurry, should buy a fast car like a 335D.

BMW M3 vs tuned BMW 335d Touring

This video shows that a M3 Evo can still show a tuned 335d that petrol is better smile, the guys other videos show him against a tuned 535d and he owns that too.

But it doesn't matter. The problem with drag racing is that it is all so dependent on the driver, and slightest issue ruins the run. I'd rather look at lap times, etc.

Well I bought one and loved it. Not to pose in but as a motorway tool.
I can however see the facination with a remapped diesel as i bought a new Skoda Fabia VRS and had it with 190bhp and 295lb torque in whats basically a Polo. It shifted but couldnt handle that power, as it was only designed for what they sold it with.
M3s are designed to go fast from the start.
An E46 M3 you can drive very fast with little effort, and if its not fast enough a 5 grand supercharger kit would give it just under 500BHP. Where would the poxy diseasel be then?biggrinrolleyes

Who cares about straight lines? Try taking a 335D down a decent road and you'll be left by the M3.

A drag race is pretty much all about the start, & the M3 driver had a shocker & was never going to recover. Drag racing is more about driver skill than most non drag racers would believe, so in many cases is no indication of which car is quicker.
